Well summer is almost here and before long the humidity will begin to rise. Here in Qingdao the RH will often get up to 90% and temperatures in the upper 30's during July, August and September and this is very bad news for our acoustic guitars... especially the solid wood guitars.
If you can afford it, keeping your guitars in a room with an air-conditioner running on dehumidify 24/7 which will keep the room below RH 60% is an option. You could also buy a dehumidifier, but as well as being expensive to buy (a good one will cost you RMB 2000 or 3000) they are expensive to run and, unless you can route the exhaust to the outside, will increase the temperature in the room to unacceptable levels.
Perhaps the best way is to keep your guitar in it's case (when you're not playing it of course ) with a hygrometer and plenty of sachets of Silica-Gel desiccant. But where to buy good sized (10 X 7cm) sachets of Silica-Gel in China? Does anyone know of a taobao seller who has Silica-Gel packs?
One thing's for sure, if you do nothing to protect your guitar from humidity this summer it will start to sound muddy and dead, and the truss rod will need adjusting. In the worst case the top will start to bow out and the bridge plate will come unglued from the top . |
