It's not as sinister as many foreigners like to think. The censorship is to avoid social unrest getting out of hand and disrupting the ongoing, measured improvements that need to be made for ALL of the people. Some of the censoring is heavy handed and pointless in the extreme, but there are more important issues to be dealt with.
Given the relative youth of China's current leadership model and the serious issues that come with a population in excess of 1.3 billion (of which two thirds are still "peasants"), some level of control/censorship seems only prudent.
Many people in China live barely above the poverty line, so many in fact that were the government to allow those members of society who have already seen tangible improvements in their own lives to demonstrate for further benefits and freedoms for themselves, it would be to the jeopardy of those behind them.
